In the name of God, the Almighty,¹ the Merciful.

¹ O thou one enwrapped:

² Arise thou the night save a little,

³ (A half thereof, or take thou a little therefrom,

⁴ Or add thou thereto) and recite thou the Qur’an¹ distinctly.²

⁵ We will cast upon thee a weighty word;¹

⁶ The emergence of the night: it is firmer of foot¹ and more upright of speech.²

⁷ Thou hast by day much¹ movement,²

⁸ But remember thou the name of thy Lord, and devote thyself¹ completely² to Him.

⁹ The Lord of the East and the West; there is no god save He;¹ so take thou Him as disposer of affairs.

¹⁰ And be thou patient over what they say, and forsake thou them with a comely forsaking.¹

¹¹ And leave thou Me with the deniers, the possessors of prosperity, and grant thou them respite a little.

¹² With Us are shackles, and a raging fire,

¹³ And a food that chokes, and a painful punishment,

¹⁴ The day the earth and the mountains convulse and the mountains become a sliding sandhill.

¹⁵ (We have sent to you a messenger as a witness against you, as We sent to Pharaoh¹ a messenger,

¹⁶ But Pharaoh¹ opposed the Messenger, so We seized him with a calamitous grip.

¹⁷ So how will you be in prudent fear,¹ if you deny,² of a day that will make the children white-haired?

¹⁸ The sky will break apart therein; His promise will be fulfilled.

¹⁹ This is a reminder, so whoso wills might take a path to his Lord.)

²⁰ Thy Lord knows that thou standest nearly two-thirds of the night, or a half of it, or a third of it, as does¹ a number of those with thee. And God determines the night and the day. He knew that you would not calculate it, and has turned towards you: — so recite what is made easy² of the Qur’an.³ He knows that there will be some sick among you, and others travelling in the earth in search of the bounty of God, and others fighting in the cause of God: — so recite what is made easy thereof, and uphold the duty,⁴ and render the purity,⁵ and lend to God a goodly loan.⁶ And what good you send ahead for your souls — you will find it with God,⁷ better and greater in reward. And ask forgiveness of God; God is forgiving and merciful.
